Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Standard Pantry Door Sizes?

Standard pantry door sizes typically range from 24” to 36” in width and 80” to 96” in height, which works well for most kitchen pantry openings. The most common pantry door sizes are:

  • 24” x 80”
  • 28” x 80”

These, along with 30” x 80”, 32” x 80”, and 36” x 80”, are considered standard or “stock” sizes for pantry doors.

👉 For visuals and helpful sizing comparisons, check out:
What Are the Standard Pantry Door Sizes?

What size frosted glass pantry door do I need for my space?

The size of your frosted glass pantry door depends on your rough opening dimensions and whether you’re ordering a slab pantry door or a prehung pantry door. Common pantry door sizes are 24”, 28”, 30”, 32”, and 36” wide, typically with a height of 80”. The most popular pantry door sizes are 24” x 80” and 28” x 80”, and we offer both stock sizes and custom sizes to suit your needs.

If your opening is a unique size, we can create a custom frosted glass pantry door to fit — just reach out to request pricing.

What’s the difference between a slab pantry door and a prehung pantry door?

A slab pantry door is just the door panel itself — no frame, no hinges, no hardware. It’s ideal if you’re replacing an existing door and already have a jamb or frame in place. Slab doors are often used by homeowners or contractors doing a custom install or replacing a door in an existing opening.

A prehung pantry door comes already mounted inside its own frame (also called a jamb), with hinge cutouts and the door already attached. It’s a complete unit that’s ready to install into a rough opening — perfect for new construction or when your existing frame is damaged or uneven.

👉 For a detailed explanation of both, check out our blog:
Slab vs. Prehung Doors: What’s the Difference?

When ordering a frosted glass pantry door from Sans Soucie, you’ll be able to choose between slab or prehung in just a few clicks using our online Pantry Door Designer. It’s quick, easy, and walks you through every option step by step.

Do you sell single and double (pair) frosted glass pantry doors?

Yes! All of our frosted glass pantry doors are available as single doors or as a double door pair. When ordering through our Online Pantry Door Designer, simply select “Pair” during the customization process.

Can these pantry doors be used as a pocket door?

Yes! Any of our slab frosted glass pantry doors can be installed as a pocket door. You’ll simply select a slab (also called “book”) door when customizing your door. We don’t sell pocket door hardware (yet, anyway!), but here’s a hardware kit on Amazon that many of our customers have used successfully:

👉 Johnson Hardware 1500 Series Pocket Door Frame

Should a pantry door open in or out?

Most pantry doors open out, into the kitchen, rather than swinging into the pantry. This makes the pantry space easier to organize and helps avoid clearance issues with shelves or storage bins. That said, the swing direction of your pantry door is completely up to you — and with our custom frosted glass pantry doors, you can specify the swing direction that works best for your layout.

When ordering a prehung pantry door, you’ll be asked to choose your swing direction during the design process. Not sure which option is right? Your installer can help you decide based on your kitchen’s layout, cabinet placement, and wall clearance.

What should the rough opening be for a pantry door?

2″ wider and 2″ taller than the size of the SLAB DOOR.

What size frosted glass pantry door do I need for my rough opening?

To determine your pantry door size, subtract 2” from the width and 2½” from the height of your rough opening. This allows room for the door jamb and shims needed to properly level the door during installation.

Example: If your rough opening is 30” wide by 82½” high, you’ll need a 28” x 80” pantry door.

What should the rough opening be for a pantry door?

For a slab pantry door, your rough opening should be 2″ wider and 2″ taller than the actual door size. For example, if your frosted glass pantry door is 24″ x 80″, your rough opening should be approximately 26″ wide by 82″ highFor a prehung pantry door, the required rough opening can vary slightly depending on the jamb width and threshold type, but the 2″ rule is still a helpful starting point. When ordering, you’ll choose your jamb width and hinge side — all of which help ensure a perfect fit.

How thick are your frosted glass pantry doors?

Our standard frosted glass pantry doors are 1-3/8″ thick, which is the typical interior door thickness found in most homes. This applies to both slab pantry doors and prehung pantry doors. If you need a thicker door (1-3/4″), Contact Us for options and pricing.

Are your Pantry Doors solid wood?

The doors are SOLID (not hollow), but not solid WOOD. They are veneer doors with a SOLID CORE.  A Veneer door is FAR better than a solid wood door because a solid wood door WILL WARP over time. The CORE of a veneer door is called an “Engineered Wood Substrate”.  The huge advantage is that unlike a SOLID WOOD DOOR, THIS MATERIAL IS FAR LESS PRONE TO WARPING

👉 See our sheet about Veneer vs. Solid Wood Door Advantages.

Will my pantry door be ready for paint or stain when it arrives?

No. Your Pantry Door Will Arrive Unfinished & Require Prep Work.   Prep work will include using wood filler to fill the small staple and/or nail divots that will be in the door stops where they were nailed into place to secure the glass.  It’s important to know that these as well as small imperfections or chips are a common occurrence in untreated and unfinished wood.  Wood is a natural material and can have knots, cracks and other variations that can effect the surface.  To prepare the wood for staining or primed door for for painting, it is necessary to address any small imperfections or chips.  This can also include small scuffs that occasionally occur in shipping, that may need to be sanded, or will be painted over.  This is a normal part of the prep work and should be expected.

👉 See visual examples of typical prep and finish work in our Prep & Finish Reference Sheet.

Which side of my pantry door glass will be frosted?

The sandblast frosted surface will be on the INSIDE of the pantry, with the smooth glass side facing outward into the kitchen. This is standard for most of our glass products (except showers) because the smooth side is considered the “optimal viewing side” (even tho the glass is beautiful on both sides!) — and it’s easier to keep clean.

Since pantry doors are located in the kitchen, they’re more likely to be touched with greasy or soiled fingers. While household glass cleaner will remove any marks on the frosted side, the smooth surface is quicker and easier to clean, making this the most practical setup.

How do you Ship your Pantry Doors?

Your pantry door will ship fully insured by Freight delivery, and will be “Curbside“.  Curbside delivery means your order will be dropped off at the curb or end of your driveway — it’s not brought inside. For more info., here’s a helpful article about our lead times.

Are frosted glass pantry doors private?

Private enough for a pantry, yes! Most frosted glass pantry doors feature a fully frosted background that effectively obscures the view into the pantry. On the classic style of a frosted glass pantry door, where you have text and a border, the lettering and border are clear glass.  These elements are small and narrow, and you can only clearly see into the pantry, when you walk right up to the glass and peer through. The frosted surface provides more than enough privacy to block the view into the pantry  — all while letting light pass through beautifully.

Can you see through a frosted glass pantry door into the pantry?

No. Only when items are pressed right up against the glass, can you “see” them thru the obscure glass. Once a few inches away, the object becomes blurred and disappears.  Any clear areas (such as lettering and the border) are see thru, but will appear darkened when the pantry light is off.  When the pantry light is on, if you approach the glass and peer thru, you’ll be able to see into the pantry thru those narrow or small shapes.  For more details see our article “Why Frosted Glass Pantry Doors are the Ideal Choice for Privacy and Light“.

Do frosted glass pantry doors let in natural light?

Yes! One of the biggest benefits of a frosted glass pantry door is that it allows natural light to pass through while still maintaining privacy. The frosted surface diffuses the light, softening it as it enters the space — so your kitchen or pantry stays bright without exposing the contents inside.

What are the benefits of choosing a frosted glass pantry door?

Frosted glass pantry doors offer the perfect balance of privacy, light, and style. They obscure the view into your pantry while still allowing natural light to pass through — making your kitchen feel more open and bright. Plus, they add a beautiful, decorative element that instantly upgrades your space.

At Sans Soucie, you can choose from a wide variety of custom frosted glass pantry door designs, from classic to modern, each handcrafted with your choice of sandblast effect. Whether you’re going for privacy, elegance, or a little of both, frosted glass delivers a functional and stunning solution.

Are frosted glass pantry doors in style right now?

Yes — frosted glass pantry doors are very much in style! In fact, they’ve become one of the most popular design choices for kitchens of all styles, from modern and farmhouse to vintage and transitional. They offer a clean, upscale look while adding texture, light, and a touch of personalization. Whether you’re going for a sleek contemporary kitchen or a warm rustic feel, a frosted glass pantry door with a custom design can instantly elevate your space and make the pantry a beautiful focal point.

Is frosted glass more affordable than clear glass for pantry doors?

Not necessarily. Frosted glass is typically more expensive than plain clear glass because it requires an additional process to create the frosted effect — especially when it’s sandblasted by hand, like all of our frosted glass pantry doors.

At Sans Soucie, the price of your pantry door will depend more on the type of sandblast effect you choose (such as 1D, 2D Shaded, or 3D Carved & Shaded) and whether you select an existing or custom design. While a simple frosted background adds some cost, it also adds privacy, style, and value to your home.

THE PROCESS:  DESIGN YOUR DOOR IN OUR FUN, EASY TO USE DOOR DESIGNER!

Our door designer tool will walk you thru a process where you get to customize everything about your door, and see your image change as you make your selection!

  1. Choose a decorative glass design from our vast library or work with our artists to create a brand new one-of-a-kind design to your specifications.
  2. Select your type of glass effect:  etched glass, 3D carved glass, stained glass or beveled glass.
  3. Select between a single door or double doors.
  4. Determine the width and height of your door by carefully measuring the opening.  See our helpful guide to help you determine what size door to order, per your rough opening size.
  5. Select the material of the door from primed, eight wood types or a fiberglass door.
  6. Decide between a prehung in the jamb or a slab door.
  7. If you choose prehung, you’ll need to determine and selection a couple of things:
    1. Swing Direction:  You’ll need to determine which swing direction you want the door to have.  Choose from In-swing, out-swing, left-hand and right-hand door swing variations.  Our door designer tool demonstrates this using graphic illustrations.
    2. Hinge Finish:  We offer 7 finishes that allow you to coordinate your hinge finish with your door knob and other fixtures nearby in the room (like cover plates, light fixtures, etc.)

PLACE YOUR ORDER

Complete your order in the final step.  Your order will ship in approx. 3-8 weeks depending on the glass effect and door type you chose.  When we’ve finished creating your door, you’ll receive an email notification along with a phone call with important information about what to expect at delivery.

DELIVERY

Free shipping to most states, orders are expertly packed in-house by our team and ship fully insured via freight delivery with a tracking number and by delivery appointment.  The freight company will contact you to set up a delivery appointment.  Delivery is curbside, so you’ll need to be able to move the shipment from your curb inside your garage or home. Please see our Shipping info. sheet for more info.

PAINTING OR STAINING YOUR DOOR

You’ll want to paint or stain your door frame right away and be sure to lay flat when storing to avoid warping.   Glass etching will be covered with a protective film that should remain in place while you stain or paint your door.  When finished, you’ll cut away the film with a blade.

INSTALLING YOUR DOOR

Installing doors is tricky business, so we highly recommend hiring a professional door installer for installation, especially when installing frosted glass pantry doors.

MAINTENANCE AND CLEANING YOUR ART GLASS

Our sandblasted glass is extremely durable and hardy!  You’ll receive a cleaning info. sheet inside your packaging, but  click the link to see our Guide to Cleaning and Maintenance of your Sans Soucie Art Glass.

The most common spots seen on sandblasted glass are typically oil spots.  Oil from perhaps greasy fingers, or other splashes that can happen in a kitchen.  Because of this, the sandblasted surface will be to the INside of your pantry.  This will greatly reduce the chances of your sandblasted glass getting touched with greasy fingers and other common kitchen splashes that can occur.  If your sandblasted glass does get an oil spot, don’t worry, it’s easily removed with either regular glass cleaner, or if it’s a more stubborn spot, will be removed with the use of acetone or rubbing alcohol.
