Interior, Entry Glass Doors in Freeform Designs

Glass front entry doors with the proper energy efficient glass create that desirable, well lit entry while at the same time providing for energy efficiency.   There are two different factors that create an energy efficient rating:

HEAT GAIN AND LOSS

Windows, doors, skylights can gain and lose heat through:

Direct conduction through the glass or glazing, frame, and/or door

  • Direct conduction through the glass or glazing, frame, and/or door
  • The radiation of heat into a house (typically from the sun) and out of a house from room-temperature objects, such as people, furniture, and interior walls
  • Air leakage through and around them.

These properties can be measured and rated according to the following energy performance characteristics:

  • U-factor
  • Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC)
  • Air leakage

SUNLIGHT TRANSMITTANCE

The ability of glazing in a window, door, or skylight to transmit sunlight into a home can be measured and rated according to the following energy performance characteristics:

  • Visible transmittance (VT)
  • Light-to-solar gain (LSG)

See this article on energy.gov for full definitions of the above.*

Our decorative etched, frosted and sculpture carved glass doors and windows (for exterior walls and entries), are created using insulated, tempered glass units, a.k.a. “IG” units or dual pane glass.  Our stained and leaded glass doors and windows are triple glaze, unless the thickness of the doorframe prohibits the thickness of the triple pane unit, in which case a dual pane is used, with the art glass panel being installed to the interior of the home.   Some of our IG’s are purchased “pre-fabricated” and we sandblast our designs on the outside surface, however in most cases, we hand-fabricate or hand insulate our OWN units, sealing the sandblast etched and carved surface to the Inside of the unit, making for easier cleaning over time.  The sandblast is actually very easy to maintain and extremely durable, but is a quicker, easier windex job when it’s smooth glass on both the inside and outside surface.

Shown here are a few of our art glass doors in a few of our effects and different frame types.
